The Sky Above the Room
In the course of an ordinary day, how often do we look up?
When we step into a truly fine building or space, our gaze is drawn naturally upward. The ceiling — the way the space above us is composed — is another kind of sky, one that speaks eloquently of the story a place has to tell.
Miyazaki, where KARYU estate is based. Look up in the lobby of a certain resort hotel and you find countless colourful parasols floating beneath a high, open ceiling. The bright air of the southern coast seems to pour down from overhead.
Across the ocean, to the city of Chicago. In a restaurant converted from an old warehouse, soft lights were scattered like stardust across a bare, unrefined steel ceiling. The weight of industrial history and a modern sense of ease, crossing in one masterful composition.
Elsewhere, a three-Michelin-starred restaurant. At the centre of a room shining in gold sits a chandelier of commanding presence, enveloping the entire space in gravity and formality.
At a hotel by Lake Kawaguchi, we came upon a chandelier taking the majestic form of Mount Fuji.
And in the sky of a select shop in Roppongi, a boldly suspended bonsai — hung, of all things, from the ceiling — quietly gave rise to a world of refined Japanese modernity.
Parasols, stardust, a chandelier, and a bonsai.
To design a space is also to design the sky that those who enter it will see.
